A Primer about Soil Enzymology

Report from Bill Schwoerer, Western Regional Sales Director

A 2011 book titled Soil Enzymology was ahead of its time in uncovering valuable insights about the important role played by soil enzymes in soil health and crop fertility management.

The authors, Shonkor Kumar Das of the University of Fukui in Japan and Ajit Varma of Amity Institute of Microbial Technology in India, detail the role that soil enzymes play in controlling nutrient cycling and the decomposition of organic matter--two factors that are essential to maintaining soil quality and fertility.

They also cover the various facets of soil enzymes, such as their functions, biochemical and microbiological properties, and the factors affecting their activities. Several chapters discuss the soil enzymatic activities in soils that have been contaminated.
